UFOs and Weird Noises: What’s Happening in the Bali Sky?

The sighting of an Unidentified Flying Object (UFO) isn’t a new phenomenon, even in Bali.

Back in 2011, a UFO sighting in Bali made it all the way to Kompas.com with the headline UFO Melancong ke Bali Selama Satu Jam. But is it really a UFO and aliens? Or just a really confused tourist?

What witnesses saw in that article was most likely a traditional Balinese kite. Yes, you heard that right!

Layangan Bali

In 2011, it was the early days when traditional Balinese kites started getting lights for nighttime flying. So, if you saw something glowing in the sky, it wasn’t a UFO—it was just a kite trying to show off its disco moves!

The UFO reports from May 2011 also lined up perfectly with Bali’s Kite Season, which runs from May to August. So, if you thought you were witnessing an alien invasion, you were probably just watching a kite party!

Balinese traditional kites are not your average kites. Some are huge—like, “I need a bigger backyard” huge—reaching lengths of up to several meters. So, it’s no wonder they can carry lights. They’re basically the rock stars of the kite world!

Some types of Balinese kites even have Guwangan, a part of the kite that makes a buzzing sound. It’s like the kite is trying to communicate with you—“Hey, I’m not an alien, just a really cool kite!” Check it out in this video.

So, if you suddenly see lights in the Bali sky, especially over the rice fields, and hear a loud buzzing sound, don’t panic! You’re not about to be abducted by aliens; you’re just under a kite that’s living its best life!
